BANFFSHIRE Field Club took a leap into the digital age this week with the launch of a new website.

The move online will significantly improve access to some valuable printed resources.

For 60 years from its foundation in 1880 the Banffshire Field Club published its Transactions – a treasure trove of knowledge about Banffshire. Until now these existed only as hard copy pamphlets and their value was known only by a few scholarly devotees.

These 6,000 papers have now gone digital with the help of a recent grant from the Strathmartine Trust. And – following the launch of the new website this week – these can be accessed free of charge.

The archive is a mine of information for anyone with an interest in Banffshire’s history, geology, wildlife, archaeology and folklore.

Visitors to www.banffshirefieldclub.org.uk can also browse a gallery of historic photographs and participate in discussion forums on topics of relevance to Banffshire. Another feature of the new site is an online shop, where a selection of Banffshire Field Club publications is available to buy.

Banffshire Lord Lieutenant Clare Russell and other invited guests attended the formal website launch on Tuesday night at Strathisla Distillery in Keith.
