EXCITEMENT is building in Macduff as camera crews are set to roll in to film scenes for Netflix hit The Crown next week.

Macduff Harbour will be the latest north-east coastal spot to feature on screens around the globe after filming for the BBC's gangster drama Peaky Blinders created a buzz in Portsoy back in February.

Filming got under way this month for the fifth and penultimate season of The Crown.

The Netflix original drama, which picked up a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series this year, chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II from the 1940s onwards.

It is believed the latest season will cover events in the 1990s – a period which covers the death of Diana Princess of Wales. Jonny Lee Miller has been cast as John Major, who was Britain's prime minister when Princess Diana died, and Olivia Williams has joined the cast as Camilla Parker Bowles.

The last series, with Olivia Colman starring as Queen Elizabeth II, opened at the end of the 1970s and covered the introduction of Diana Spencer, played by Emma Corrin. The timeline of season four covered the Thatcher years, with Gillian Anderson playing the role of then prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

Left Bank Pictures will get filming for series five under way at Macduff Harbour on Monday, August 2.

Residents and businesses around Shore Street, Duff Street, Institution Street and Hutcheon Street were given advance notice of preparations for the filming activities, which include loading vessels into the water.

Equipment including a camera crane, boats, cranes, camera, track and tripods are expected to be set up in and around the harbour at the weekend.

Previous seasons of The Crown have featured other north-east landmarks including Balmoral, Slains Castle and Cruden Bay beach.

The lavish production is one of the most expensive television series in history.
