Cornhill Highland Games welcomes visitors as final Knock Hill Race is contested
Crowds descended on a village for its highland games which included the final running of its historic hill race.
Cornhill Highland Games’ Knock Hill Race was won by Ian Russell with a time of 59 minutes and six seconds. The first woman was Amy Muir with a time of one hour, 14 minutes and 31 seconds.
It was also the last 10k road race which was won by Ian Adamson with a time of 38 minutes and two seconds. The first woman was Louise Mckenzie with a time of 39 minutes.
The first Knock Hill Race took place in 1970 as a fundraiser towards creating a playing field for the community.
The distance covered from Cornhill to the top of the Knock Hill and back to the village is 8.5 miles.
Organisers said the decision to end the event comes as participation numbers have continued to decline in recent years, and in recognition of the resources, time input and safety considerations which must be factored in to hosting the annual race as part of the games.
A number of other competitions were also held to entertain the crowds including heavy events such as putting the stone, throwing the hammer, throwing the weight for distance and tossing the caber.
The light events included the 90m, 400m and 800m running races, high jump, long jump and hop, step and leap.
There was also tug of war, highland dancing and children’s races.
StrathIsla Pipe Band and Portsoy Pipe Band paraded in the main arena.
