Further birthday wishes for RAF Lossiemouth

By Alistair Whitfield

RAF Lossiemouth has been wished well by Richard Lochhead on its 80th anniversary today.

Moray's MSP said: “Over the last 80 years RAF Lossiemouth has played a vital role in our nation’s defence and continues to thrive as Scotland’s only operational airbase.

“Of course we should remember the massive community campaign that defended the base from closure by the Conservative UK Government in 2011.

"I’ve fond memories of speaking at the rally and joining thousands of people on the march to save the base. The community stopped the UK Government in their tracks and as a result it is thriving today.

“As the base continues to expand for the arrival of the new P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft that will be based in Lossiemouth, it is set to play an even greater part in the defence of the country.

"The expansion will benefit the area hugely, not least with the creation of new high-skilled jobs that will be a boost for the wider local economy.

“RAF Lossiemouth has helped to define many of Moray’s communities over the years.

"Former personnel, of which there are thousands, and current personnel, have played and continue to play a vital role in the local community, and I hope that positive relationship continues in the future.

"I’ve been proud to represent RAF Lossiemouth over the years and the base bring a uniqueness to Moray and all our lives given that many of us have friends or family members that have served there or continue to serve.”
