Garmouth’s annual Maggie Fair - founded the year Mary Queen of Scots was executed - to take place in June

AN ANNUAL event that was founded in the year that Mary Queen of Scots was executed is set to take place again in Moray this June.

There are few village fairs that can boast of having been annually since 1587 - but that is what makes Garmouth’s Maggie Fair so unique.

While retaining its respectful nod to history and tradition, Maggie Fair has adapted, grown and moved with the times from a one-day event to a varied programme of activities leading up to the Fair Day itself on Saturday, June 29.

Buckie and District Pipe Band will lead the procession including Fancy Dress entrants from The Cross down to the Playing Field where local resident and renowned artist, Mr Graeme Nairn, will open the fair.

As well as traditional stalls, attractions include children’s fancy dress and activities; classic cars; obstacle challenges; a barbecue; beer tent; live music; visiting crafters; art exhibition; local and visiting exhibitors; Speyside Falconry; grand raffle and Village Hall teas.

Maggie Fair Day is rounded off handsomely with evening fun, live music and food at the golf club.

This is a family fun day for all ages and all proceeds are reinvested into local amenities for the benefit of the community. Cash will particularly help towards the upkeep of parks, open spaces, the village hall and the water tower.

To ensure pedestrian safety during the opening and procession the access road from The Cross to the Playing field will be closed to traffic from 12.30pm until 1.30pm.

Parking will be available next to the bowling club and at the golf club, but will need to be accessed before the road closes.

There is also parking at the Spey Viaduct car park. Visiting car owners are asked to be respectful of properties and parking restrictions.
