The company's employees nominated Moray Women’s Aid to be its charity partner for last year.

Jodie Clayton, from the company’s HR team, said a number of online and offline initiatives had helped raise such a large amount.

She added: "Not only will our donation help refurbish the refuge, which was originally built 16 years ago, but we also hope that it will help raise the profile of the charity amongst those who need its services most."

Having grown from a helpline staffed by four people in 1987, Moray Women’s Aid now offers a wide range of help and services for those experiencing or overcoming domestic abuse.

During 2020 alone it offered support and guidance to 567 women as well as 124 children and young people.

Melanie Wood, the charity's fundraising manager, said: "We know from experience that moving into a refuge that is welcoming and comfortable makes a huge difference to a woman’s sense of self-worth.

"We work hard to achieve this, but after 16 years it’s beginning to look tired, and cookers, beds, sofas, and carpets need replacing.

"We really appreciate the support from Gordon & MacPhail and are delighted to be able to put the £11,000 they have raised towards helping refurbish the refuge.

"On behalf of all staff at Moray Women’s Aid, the women, children and young people we support, thank you so much for choosing us as your charity of the year."
