The UK health secretary has said the country cannot relax social distancing measures even as the weather is set to improve.

Giving the latest Downing Street coronavirus briefing Mr Hancock said: "We are set for a warm weekend, but the disease is still spreading and we absolutely cannot afford to relax the social distancing measures that we have in place.

"We cannot relax our discipline now – if we do, people will die."

Mr Hancock's advice echoed that given by Police Scotland earlier today.

At today's briefing Mr Hancock also praised the "extraordinary" work done to establish the temporary Nightingale Hospital in London, which was officially opened by the Prince of Wales.

Planned, constructed and staffed in nine days he said: "It shows what is possible when we come together as one team in one national effort."

Temporary hospitals are also planned for Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol and Harrogate.

In the face of ongoing criticism Mr Hancock also said the government was working "round the clock" to deliver personal protective equipment to frontline workers, with more than 26 million items of PPE delivered to 281 organisations yesterday.

He said that three national trials were ongoing into various aspects of the outbreak and that they were looking for more people to volunteer for trials.

He later clarified that it would be for NHS staff to approach suitable patients with symptoms to see if they would be willing to sign up to trials, rather than for members of the public simply to come forward on their own behalf.
