With overall results at the school up on 2019 – the last time formal exams were sat due to the Covid pandemic – 2022 will go down as a moment of exam history for Milne's student Hebe Muckle who became the first in Moray to scoop eight straight A grades in her Nat 5s.

She said: "It feels a bit weird getting eight As.

"I was hoping to get them but I wasn't expecting it.

"I'm doing five Highers this year and hope to go on and do medicine."

Milne's rector Jemma Playfair lauded Hebe's achievement and those of the other students at the school.

"It's a great achievement to be the first pupil in Moray to achieve eight A grades at Nat 5," she commented.

"We're really proud of her.

"We're always keen to support a young person who feels they can do that bit extra in taking on additional courses.

"Our results overall were up on 2019; it's not really possible to compare this year with last year as there were not exams in 2021. Our S4 results were really, really good so hopefully that'll translate into good results going into S5.

"Most of the pupils were a bit nervous about going back to exams especially with disruption there has been with both young people and staff having to self-isolate. We have some pupils who had to self-isolate three times over the course of the year. It's not the same having to work from home, especially in practical subjects.

"However, the staff made sure they were very well organised and prepared and after they sat their first exam the nerves disappeared."

Ms Playfair added that the fact Milne's is a smaller secondary school – it currently has around 455 students on its roll – helped created a very supportive, family atmosphere as those in S4-6 ventured into the sometimes unfamiliar world of formal exams.

"If you ask the pupils what their favourite thing about the school is they'll say the staff and if you ask the staff they'll say the pupils.

"There's a really lovely ethos and as we're a smaller school we've more of a family feel."

For last year's S4 students, along with Hebe Muckle there were special mentions for Brodie Mitchell (5 As at Nat 5 and 1 Higher A), Eilidh Hay (7 As at Nat 5), Eva Melrose (6As and 1 B at Nat 5), Ellie Thomson-Bialy (5 As and 1 B at Nat 5). Young Eva had the added challenge of battling a health condition which leaves her very fatigued. as a result, she had to sit her exams separately from her classmates so she could take rest breaks, a process which meant her exams last around three hours each.

In last year's S5-6, Eilidh Wiles, Sam Bayley and Briony Stewart all earned themselves 1 A at Advanced Higher and 3 As at Higher, while Joshua Ward bagged 3 As and 2 Bs at Higher. Owen Brown is now the proud possessor of 4 As and a B at Higher.
