MP Graham Leadbitter has called for a “justice and financial redress” to be delivered more quickly than it is as he reveals at least 10 locals were caught up in the “horrific miscarriage of justice.”

The Moray West, Nairn and Strathspey made the call after the release of the bombshell new report into the impact of the scandal on the postmasters affected.

It revealed that thirteen people are believed to have taken their own lives as a result and a further 59 considered doing it.

Figures obtained by Mr Leadbitter’s office from the House of Commons Library show 10 subpostmasters in Moray West, Nairn and Strathspey applied to the Horizon Shortfall Scheme – the redress scheme with the most claimants.

Overall, between 1999 and 2015, more than 900 subpostmasters across the UK were wrongfully convicted of theft, fraud and false accounting based on faulty Horizon data.

Mr Leadbitter said: “The Horizon scandal was a horrific miscarriage of justice which led to immense suffering for those affected, with lives ruined right across the UK, including 10 subpostmasters right here in Moray West, Nairn and Strathspey.

“This government, much like the ones before it, has been too slow to deliver justice and financial redress, and must get a move on.

“It’s a scandal in and of itself that people who were found to have been innocent years ago are still waiting to be compensated.”
