HOPEMAN youngsters are urging people to explore their local coastline this summer by following their Micro Lighthouse Trail to boost CLAN Cancer Support.

P7 pupils have devised a trail challenge, along with Hopeman Primary School's Parent Council, to support the charity's Light The North campaign.

Their Micro Lighthouse Trail runs from Burghead to Covesea, taking in Cummingston, Hopeman and Duffus along the way.

Samara Shah, parent council chairperson, said: "This is an opportunity for the whole family to explore our wonderful local coast, by following the map, solving clues and searching for the brightly decorated lighthouse posters along the way. Each lighthouse poster contains a letter. Once you have all the letters, they can be rearranged to make a name that lights up the north."

Maps are available during the summer holidays from local businesses – including Duffus Village Shop & Post Office; Hopeman Stores & Post Office; Costcutter Hopeman; Burghead Post Office; and Burghead Visitor Centre – for a suggested donation of £2 per family.

Samara added: "We are delighted that local businesses and amenities have been so supportive in getting involved in the trail.

"We hope that it showcases the many great things there are to see and do along the Moray coast. Whether a local or a visitor, we hope that people will discover or learn something new about the area."

Hopeman Primary also participated in CLAN's Little Lights trail, with winning designs from Iona Lambie (P7) and Jamie Duncan (P5) painted on to the school's little lighthouse.

The school's little lighthouse will go on display at Johnstons of Elgin from August 9 to October 17.

Pupils have also been busy hand painting mini lighthouses and a selection is available to buy at Costcutter Hopeman and Hopeman Stores.

The school has raised £742.21 so far through the sale of their mini lighthouses and Micro Lighthouse Trail maps, as well as a raffle.

CLAN's Light The North art sculpture trail, in partnership with Wild in Art, launches in August and will encourage people to explore 50 2.5-metre tall lighthouses from Aberdeen to the northern isles, which will be designed by some of the UK’s most talented artists. At the end of trail, each of the lighthouse sculptures will be auctioned off for the charity.

The lighthouse symbol represents CLAN as a beacon of hope for anyone affected by cancer.
