NORTH-EAST storyteller Jackie Ross will lead a Halloween story time event in Dufftown this month.

Halloween Tales for Quines & Loons will be an evening of games and stories at Mortlach Memorial Hall, on Saturday, October 30, before participants head out guising to ward off evil spirits for the coming year.

The event has been organised as part of an expanded Scottish International Storytelling Festival for 2021.

Jackie's story time session will be broadcast live online.

The festival, which runs between October 15-31, is welcoming back in-person audiences and showcasing storytelling events across the country in its largest Go Local programme to date.

The theme this year is "Imagine".

Storytellers based or working in Scotland were invited to submit a proposal on the theme. The result is a series of new works developed by storytellers and musicians, supported by the Scottish Government Festival Expo Fund.

Leading storytellers from Scotland and beyond are showcasing the new works.

Festival director Donald Smith said: "Stories and songs are vital for human survival. They carry our emotions, memories and values. They bind us together as families, communities and a nation, especially through tough times.

"As we emerge from the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Scottish International Storytelling Festival will continue to engage, inspire and entertain as we travel through stories.

"Our festival commissions invite us to imagine different pasts, futures, or timeless others, to challenge what we know and create the images of what we are yet to discover."

A special festival strand of events this year celebrate the life and work of Orcadian poet and writer George Mackay Brown on the centenary of his birth.

Halloween Tales for Quines & Loons is a free ticketed event and starts at 6pm on Saturday, October 30.

The full festival programme is available here.
