A 30-year-old man had been banned from the roads after he was caught driving while on drugs.

Police were travelling along A96 through Keith when they spotted a Ford Mondeo coming in the opposite direction with Kenneth Low at the wheel.

Knowing that colleagues had been on contact with Low about another matter, the officers turned their vehicle around and began to follow.

Fiscal Depute Victoria Silver told Elgin Sheriff Court that they pulled up Low's car further down the A96 near the turning to Aultmore.

The prosecutor said: "They noticed there was a strong smell of cannabis.

"The accused's pupils were dilated and he was also speaking incoherently."

The court heard that Low consented to give a sample of saliva.

This, when tested, showed that he had cannabis in his system.

Low, whose address was given in court papers as Bridge Street in Keith, pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of drugs on December 13.

He was banned from driving for 12 months and fined a total of £640.
