A man who lives in Keith has been jailed for nine months for spitting at a police constable while on the Isle of Skye.

Joseph Grant was found on the A87 near Portree during the course of April 3, 2021.

Due to concerns about his health he was first taken to hospital.

The 60-year-old later spat at the officer while in Kyle police station, hitting him on the trousers.

Grant, who lives in Mar Road, pleaded guilty to the offence earlier today at Inverness Sheriff Court.

Defence solicitor Willie Young said his client had a history of mental and physical health problems as well as issues with alcohol.

My Young added: "He was found in an embarrassing situation connected to recent surgery and there was concern for his well-being.

"He was experiencing discomfort in the back of the police vehicle in which he had been for some time.

"He has also been wearing a mask for some time.

"He took it off and spat at the officer out of frustration."

Grant, who is originally from Nairn, is already serving a prison sentence which was expected to expire at the end of next month.

Jailing him for nine months, Sheriff Sara Matheson said: "The emergency services such as police and ambulance are entitled to the protection of the court."
