Catriona joined the Labour party after being “impressed by the support received” as the secretary of the College’s EIS-FELA branch.

She was encouraged to run for the seat when a number of people approached her for the role, and says that she is “honoured to have been selected by local members to fight this election in the area in which I live.”

Originally from Greenock, Catriona has lived in Elgin for more than 30 years and has worked as both a Criminal Justice Social Worker and a Lecturer in Moray.

She is to retire from her role as a Curriculum Team Leader in Moray College at the end of August 2024 after 29 years at the college.

Catriona is hopeful about the election. She added: “Elgin has a consistent record of electing Labour councillors stretching back over 40 years.

“We think we have a real chance of gaining another Labour seat on the Moray Council in this by-election, which will send a clear message to the Scottish Government: we’ve had enough.”

Councillor John Divers, Labour’s incumbent councillor in Elgin City South, welcomed Ms McBain’s selection.

He added: “I am incredibly pleased we have Catriona standing in this by-election.

“She has been a brilliant campaigner against cuts at the college, and she will be a brilliant advocate for the people of Elgin South.”

The Elgin South by-election is set to take place on Thursday, November 7.
