Buckie Ladies just a game away from historic league treble glory

The countdown to possible league glory is well under way for a female football team.

Saturday, September 21 was a glory day for Buckie Ladies when they claimed the Highlands and Islands League Cup for the third time in a row after seeing off the challenge of Sutherland.

However, there has been no time for the Gordon Park side to rest on their laurels as they get ready to battle for the league title tomorrow (Sunday). As with the cup, should they be triumphant it will be a hat-trick to championships.

A win away to Ross County will see the holders retain their crown - any other result will mean the trophy heading for Dingwall or up the road to Sutherland. A Ross County victory - or should they draw and Sutherland not win - means they are champions, although Sutherland could sneak it if County and Buckie draw and they win.

While Buckie battered County 7-0 when the met earlier in the season at Gordon Park, the Highlanders fielded a much weaker side than would normally be expected.

Buckie boss Laura Duncan was not reading much into that result, but remained quietly confident that her squad have more than enough in the tank to get the job done, especially after a gutsy performance to see off Sutherland.

Speaking after the League Cup final, she said: “We need to beat Ross County to win the league, it’s as simple as that.

“I think they’ll field a stronger side than they did the last time but I think Saturday [League Cup final] showed just how much strength, character and talent we have.”

The game is due to be played at Highland Football Academy, Dingwall, kick-off 1pm.
