Listen Well Scotland (LWS), which is based in Nairn and has volunteers across the country, have adapted their courses for those who want to strengthen their own mental wellbeing and support those around them.

With lockdown rules meaning face-to-face sessions are out of bounds for the time being, LWS has launched a new Let’s Get Listening online listening course followed up by two virtual workshops.

LWS Director of Listening and Training Services Maureen Wilson said: "Most of us know that it helps to talk about things that are worrying us.

"But did you know that having a good listener can make all the difference? So what is it that makes a good listener?

"This new online training course from Listen Well Scotland will teach you the basics of how to listen well. You will learn about active empowering listening and how to use this to build mental resilience and wellbeing.

"This is a valuable skill which can be used in all areas of your life.

"Everyone can learn to listen well. This course will help you unlock your listening potential (whatever your age) and give you the confidence to be there for others when they need to talk honestly and openly about their feelings."

The course introduces the skills of empowering listening. Learning gained can be used in all relationships with others – in family, in work environments, in schools and in communities – as well as for general health and wellbeing.

The online course uses a range of teaching methods and activities to enable people to learn and includes PDFs to download as a reminder of learning.

Allocated course study time is around 10 hours – though time taken may vary. LWS suggest a minimum of five hours is required. Participants have access to the online course for a three-month period.

A certificate of course completion is available.
