A GROWING family of knitted dolls has given a woman a real focus to cope with lockdown.

Karen Henderson (76), from Mosstodloch, now has an extended family at her home in Pinewood Road.

Karen started knitting last March after the first lockdown came into effect – and has just kept knitting and knitting.

“I used to like knitting when I was younger. I saw a nice pattern that I liked and got going,” she said.

Karen and husband Maurice (72) have lived in Moray for 12 years, having moved north from the central belt when Maurice took up a job as transportation manager
with a local farming business.

The couple have family in Glasgow and two grandchildren. A normal family reunion over Christmas was ruled out due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Karen keeps fit with some weightlifting and cycling, and any other spare time she has is devoted to expanding her knitted family.

“I used to look forward to my line dancing, but that is all stopped.

“I have steadily knitted one after another, it has given me something to do. They are so nice and colourful, and I wanted to share them with people.”

One of her favourites is a grandfather figure with bagpipes.

Karen is a former professional photographer and also used to work in the health service. Before she retired she was a community development officer with Moray Council.

She was born in Glasgow but brought up in Ayrshire. She recently wrote a lockdown poem which we shared on our website – www.northern-scot.co.uk

While the current lockdown restrictions continue, Karen will keep knitting and her other family will keep growing.

She is enjoying the company of her knitted friends for now, until she gets the chance to meet up with family and friends again.
