THE emergency health care services provided by local opticians are being promoted.

Your optician is first call for eye emergencies.
Your optician is first call for eye emergencies.

‘Turn to your Optician/Optometrist’ aims to highlight the free service and eye advice on offer across Grampian.

Opticians are not only trained to perform thorough examinations but can assess urgent problems, check for eye disorders, and manage and treat a wide range of common eye conditions.

The drive is being run as part of NHS Grampian’s ‘Know Who To Turn To’ campaign.

Stephen McPherson, eye health network optometry advisor for NHS Grampian said: "Most people think of only visiting the optician when they think they may need eyeglasses. If you have an eye problem such as sudden loss of vision, blurred vision or sudden flashes and floaters you can make an emergency appointment with an optician.

"These appointments are provided free through the NHS and will ensure that you receive the right specialist care as soon as possible. Participating opticians have the same advanced equipment as specialist eye doctors (hospital ophthalmologists).

"Following your examination, they may be able to treat and manage your eye problem at their practice, or refer you to your GP, or to a hospital eye clinic if necessary."

Emergency appointments can be made with all participating opticians.

To find an optician, call the free NHS Grampian healthline on 0500 202030, or if you have an eye problem when your optician is closed, and feel it can’t wait, phone NHS 24 on 08454 242424.

Further information is available at www.know-who-to-turn-to.com or by calling the free healthline on 0500 202030.
