A SECRET ballot on the proposed community buyout of the Covesea Skerries Lighthouse gets underway today (Friday).
Papers will be dropping through the letterboxes of registered electors in the IV31 6 postcode area to seek their views on the plan, which would see the iconic tower transformed into a visitor attraction.
Residents have just 10 days to return their papers under the rules of the Scottish Government’s Community Right to Buy Scheme.
The Covesea Lighthouse Community Company (CLCC) was set up earlier this year to drive the community buyout forward after it emerged the lighthouse was to be decommissioned.
A feasibility study and options appraisal, undertaken by Nick Brown at NB planning and architecture and funded by LEADER and HIE, has now come back with positive results.
Should balloted locals give a "resounding yes" to the plan, the community will have six months to attract enough money, so help from people across Moray will be required.
The price of the building is still subject to negotiations.
