The 2019 Lossiemouth Christmas lights switch-on has received a major boost-as former organisers come out of retirement this year to help ensure a very special anniversary is celebrated in style.

The annual celebration in the Moray coastal community commenced in 2000-and has since drawn countless thousands to the community as a long line of celebrities were recruited to switch on the festive lights.

Organising each event has become a year-long task for a small dedicated group supported by the crucial input of a “techy” group who have been involved since the outset erecting, dismantling and repairing the lights. Now to help ensure the 20th event is one of the best ever, several of those who were part of the original organising committee are to return and get involved.

Chairman of the reformed “2000 “Group, Iain Riddoch-Allan said “Our aim is to create a full afternoon of entertainment for all the family, including a float procession, marching bands and live music from several artists. We aim to have street entertainers, a children`s choir – and of course all the attractions that over the years have made the Lossiemouth switch-on one of the best in Moray”.

Lossiemouth Lights committee chair, Mary Millar said “the current committee are a small band of enthusiastic volunteers and whilst recognising this will be the 20th anniversary we were unsure if we could manage a larger event. Then we heard from some of the original committee members who said they wished to become involved and help organise something extra for this special anniversary”.

Now members of the public, schools and local organisations will be approached by the committee, in particular about the creation of floats, involvement in the procession and other entertainments.

Iain also said “The very first switch-on in Lossiemouth was a great success and through the years volunteers have built on that Success.

It is fitting that for this 20th event we have members of previous committees joining with those who continue to carry the workload year on year”. Mary added “We are confident that with the enthusiastic help of the Lossiemouth community this will be a very special year”.
