MORAY'S MSP has urged owners of modified cars to stop and think of the distress that loud backfiring can cause to residents and animals.

Richard Lochhead MSP has been contacted by a number of locals over the anti-social noise caused by modified cars in and around Elgin.

He has now raised these concerns with police and is appealing to car owners involved to think of the local community and to stop.

Mr Lochhead said: "I've been contacted by a number of constituents about cars that have been modified to backfire travelling around Elgin, with a couple of cars specifically causing issues in the community at the moment.

"I have heard about young mums with babies being disturbed by the loud backfiring, pets being frightened and members of the public distressed by what is anti-social behaviour.

"From the feedback I have received I also appreciate that this is not just an Elgin issue, but affects Lossiemouth, Forres and elsewhere too.

"I would appeal to the car owners to think of others and to please stop this.

"I have spoken to Police Scotland's Chief Inspector in Moray about this and passed on all the information sent to me by constituents, but it is also important that members of the public call 101 to officially lodge a complaint so that it is recorded and treated as a priority.

"I will be urging Police Scotland to tackle any illegal modifications to cars but also to speak to car owners to alert them to the distress they are causing in their own communities."
