A MAJOR do-it-yourself retailer is to close its store in Elgin.

It has been confirmed that Homebase at the Springfield Retail Park on Edgar Road will close its doors, although no date has been given.

Parent company the Home Retail Group that also owns Argos, reported a pre-tax profit of £13.5 million for the half-year to the end of August – a 5% fall on 2013.

There are believed to be around 20 people employed at the Elgin branch.

In October, Home Retail Group announced it was to close around 80 of its 323 Homebase stores by 2019, although seven have been shut already with another 23 to close before the end of March.

It is not known if the Edgar Road store is among those closing over the next two months.

A spokeswoman for the nationwide DIY chain said: "Following a consultation, Homebase can confirm that its store in Elgin will close with a date yet to be confirmed.

"Discussions are being held with colleagues to find alternative employment."
