A man has been charged following a crash involving a Stagecoach bus and NHS Highland van that left three people in hospital.

The crash, which occurred on the A96 between Elgin and Alves at around 1pm on Tuesday, May 20, left both vehicles off the road and demolished a drystane wall.

A nearby resident’s doorbell camera caught the immediate aftermath of the collision, with footage showing a cloud of dust thrown into the air after the wall was flattened.

Police, four fire engines, three ambulances and a paramedic response unit all flocked to the scene after the crash, with the road closed for around five hours while the clean-up took place.

Both drivers were taken to hospital, with one of two other people described as “walking wounded” also reportedly requiring hospital care. Seventeen passengers aboard the bus avoided injury.

Officers from Police Scotland confirmed on Sunday that a 37-year-old man has now been charged with a road traffic offence.

A spokesperson said: “A 37-year-old man has been charged in connection with a road traffic offence following a crash on the A96 between Elgin and Alves.

“Around 1pm on Tuesday, May 20, we were made aware of a crash involving a bus and a van.

“Emergency services attended, and three people between the ages of 37 and 60 were taken to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin for treatment.

“The 37-year-old man will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.”
