Some rail services were disrupted last night after a man was hit by a train in Inverness.

His condition is not known following the accident at around 8.55pm at the rail bridge which crosses the River Ness near Merkinch.

Shocked passengers and train staff on board the ScotRail service were due to arrive at 8.58pm but were delayed for at least two hours.

Police, ambulance workers and firefighters were at the scene.

One of the passengers said: "When something like this happens, it puts other problems in perspective. I don't know exactly what happened or why but I can only hope the man will be OK and the train driver doesn't suffer any long-term impact from this sad incident."
