A MAN who spat on a police officer and told him he had Covid-19 has been jailed for 12 months.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank told William Mackay (56), of Elgin: "This pandemic has placed the country in turmoil. People have lived in fear of contracting this deadly virus. The courts must ensure that police and other emergency workers are not faced with this behaviour.
"I want to put out a strong message and to those who continually breach bail and special conditions."
Sheriff Cruickshank told Mackay, who admitted the June 6 assault last year and several breaches of bail, that anyone who continued to breach bail "did so at their peril."
He then added a further seven months to his sentence.
Mackay of Ernest Hamilton Court admitted the assault, committed in his home. He was on bail at the time.
Inverness Sheriff Court heard that police had attended there to arrest him on another matter and he became aggressive with them.
Fiscal depute David Morton told the court: "The spittle landed on an officer's face and his body armour. A spit hood was then placed over his head to avoid any further risk to those present."
