MORAY'S MSP Richard Lochhead has said it is important to "acknowledge" and "learn from" Moray's role in the slave trade.

The area's SNP MSP shared an interactive map, created by University College London, which shows a number of addresses in Moray received compensation when slavery was abolished.

A total of 21 addresses in Forres, Elgin, Keith, Kinloss, Dufftown, Aberlour, Fochabers and Botriphine benefited. Of those, 15 are highlighted on the map.

Mr Lochhead said: "It is vitally important that we all take an interest our local and national history to help us not only learn from the past and know we come from but to put today’s world into context.

"Given the current protests and demonstrations against racism, it is important to recognise and acknowledge Moray and Scotland’s role in history but also to ask ourselves what more we should be doing today to achieve equality and tackle prejudice and racism."

There are currently 5203 addresses in the database, linked to 5544 individuals. Each address pinpoints a slave-owner or direct beneficiary in a particular place at a specific time.
