Dom Anselm Atkinson is installed as Abbot of Pluscarden Abbey

THE monks at Pluscarden have elected a new superior following the appointment of Dom Hugh Gilbert as Bishop of Aberdeen.

Dom Anselm Atkinson (54) was installed following a meeting of the Benedictine community this week.

Abbot Anselm has returned from the Abbey’s daughter house in Massachusetts, America, where he has been a permanent resident since the late 1980s.

Having taken his monastic vow at Pluscarden Abbey in 1976, Abbot Anselm was ordained as priest in 1982. His election was confirmed by Abbot Bruno Marin, Abbot President of the Subiaco Congregation, and he was installed by the Right Reverend Francis Baird, Abbot of Prinknash Abbey, in Gloucestershire.

Dom Hugh’s ordination as Bishop is scheduled to take place on Monday, August 15, at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Aberdeen.
