THE contribution of the UK’s armed forces in the battle against coronavirus has been highlighted in the Scottish Parliament.

Highlands and Islands Conservative MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston invited the parliament to thank the country’s service personnel for their response to the pandemic in his motion on Thursday, June 4.

Mr Halcro Johnston highlighted the contribution of Moray-based personnel.

He said: "The scope and range of the support provided by our armed forces personnel during the crisis has been indispensable to the national effort.

"From helping to construct the NHS Louisa Jordan hospital in Glasgow, to airlifting patients from some of our most remote communities and setting up testing facilities across the country, they have responded magnificently to the call of duty during this emergency.

RAF Puma helicopter crews based at Kinloss Barracks supported the Scottish Ambulance Service with trials of the EpiShuttle medical isolation and transportation system as part of the Scottish Government’s coronavirus response.

"And of course, while they have been supporting the civilian authorities in that fight against Covid-19, their primary role of safeguarding the country has gone on.

"Nowhere is this better exemplified than the contribution of armed forces personnel based in Moray. Puma helicopters from the Covid Support Force are operating out of Kinloss Barracks to support the NHS in Scotland and northern England, while Typhoons from RAF Lossiemouth have continued to patrol and protect UK airspace.

"The UK’s armed forces earn our thanks every day of the year for their efforts in keeping us all safe. That gratitude is even more deserved now."
