Moray commemorates 80th anniversary of VJ Day with day of events
Moray Council has raised the VJ Day flag, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in the Pacific.
Sgt Matthew Cattell, 39 Engineer Regiment hoisted the flag above Moray Council’s HQ in Elgin, assisted by Lord Lieutenant of Moray, Air Commodore Alistair Monkman CBE and Warrant Officer Joe Mulholland, RAF Lossiemouth.
They were joined by Deputy Lieutenant of Banffshire Patricia Lawson; Moray Council Leader, Cllr Kathleen Robertson; Civic Leader, Cllr John Cowe; Chief Executive Karen Greaves and Armed Forces Champion Cllr Peter Bloomfield.
It marked the beginning of a day of events across Moray and Banffshire, including a wreath-laying will at the Gordon Highlanders memorial in Keith, a Service of Thanksgiving at St Laurence Church in Forres, a separate service in Elgin and a commemorative march in Dufftown.
Alistair Monkman, Lord Lieutenant of Moray, said: “Marking 80 years since VJ Day here in Moray allows us to reflect on the immense local contribution to the war effort, both on the front lines and at home.
“The end of the war in the Pacific brought relief to families across the region, many of whom had loved ones serving far from home.”
Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: “Moray has a proud history of service, and that spirit continues today.
“As we mark 80 years since the end of the war in the Pacific, we do so with deep respect for the generation who gave so much.
“Their courage helped shape the peaceful communities we enjoy now, and it's our duty to ensure that legacy is never lost.”
Cllr Peter Bloomfield, added: "Today we honour the bravery of all who served during the Second World War, especially in the Pacific.
“VJ Day marked not just the end of conflict, but the beginning of peace and rebuilding, and it is important that we reflect on their legacy and ensure that it continues on.”
