THE safety of staff and pupils is "paramount", the head of education at Moray Council has said.
Vivienne Cross was responding to the announcement earlier today that staff and pupils in secondary schools will have to wear face coverings from next Monday.
Pupils will have to wear face coverings, unless exempt, between classes, in communal areas and on school transport from Monday, August 31.
The change to Moray schools guidance follows the national introduction of this requirement by the Scottish Government.
Following consultation with teaching unions and local authorities the education secretary announced the change.
Ms Cross said: "As set out at the start of term, our guidance for schools is subject to any change in national guidance and the requirement for face coverings in secondary schools is now included as part of the recognised safety measures.
“The safety of our pupils and staff is paramount so we’ll support our pupils and staff adapt to this change in policy, including those pupils who are exempt from wearing a face covering.
"We must ensure everyone is aware of the reasons why someone might not be wearing a face covering while supporting those who can and will be required to do so.”
