A council spokesperson said the risk would be ongoing “into the next few days”.

The predicted high tide, which comes alongside a number of flood warnings which are still in place, could cause “overtopping”.

“Please note high tides leading to wave overtopping may be possible from this afternoon (Tuesday 31 December) and into the next few days,” the spokesperson added.

“For your own safety please stay clear of the coast, particularly at high tides.”
