Moray funeral directors being consulted after controversial Moray Council proposal tabled

Funeral directors across Moray are being consulted on proposed changes to interments which could see a limit of four per day enforced.

Moray Council sent a notification last month advising funeral directors that not only would the number of interments per day be limited to four but that the times to allow them would be split into two allocated slots: 10.40am and 1.10pm.

Funeral directors across Moray raised concerns regarding the proposals.

Concerns were raised regarding the proposals.

Keith based funeral directors Frank S. McLean and Son, in a post on social media, said that enforcing the limitations will “inevitably” lead to delays.

Joe Dawsons Funeral Home in Buckie said that they have been working to four burials per day anyway but added that the proposed times are “unmanageable” for families.

The changes were meant to come into force on March 1.

But a follow-up email from Moray Council sent on January 23 said that “further dialogue” will be carried out with funeral directors to seek views on the proposed times.

The email reads: “Fixed bookings will still be introduced but not on March 1.

“The intention is to introduce these from March 31.

“Upon reviewing the information received, as well as the operational needs of the service, a decision will be made on the most appropriate morning and afternoon booking time.”

A council spokesperson added: “A final decision on the times for funeral interments will be made shortly after the council has had further dialogue with funeral directors.”

Funeral directors have been sent a short questionnaire which they have been asked to complete and return to the council.

Meanwhile, Elgin Community Council says it will discuss the matter at its next meeting on February 11 after expressing opposition to the changes.

A statement on the community council’s Facebook page reads: “It is absolutely clear from all of the comments thus far that the inhabitants of Moray are disgusted with such proposals, and we along with the other community councils in Moray will ensure that your thoughts on this matter are made known to the council.”
