Polling stations across Moray opened at 7am this morning for the early morning commuters to mark an X against their preferred candidate.

And they will remain open until 10pm to give everyone on the electoral register the chance to have their say.

Moray is a five-way contest with Douglas Ross (Scottish Conservatives), Laura Mitchell (Scottish National Party), Jo Kirby (Scottish Labour), Fiona Campbell Trevor (Scottish Liberal Democrats) and Rob Scorer (UKIP) all on the ballot paper.

As soon as the polls close the process of taking in the ballot boxes will begin and the votes transferred to Elgin Town Hall where the count will take place.

With the rural nature of the area, it will be well into the early hours of Friday morning before Moray declares the result locally.

It could be after 3am at the earliest before the Moray result is known, going by previous elections.

The Northern Scot will carry the result here at www.northern-scot.co.uk, with reaction from the candidates from the town hall.
