Joe McFadden, the winner of the 2017 series of BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, had a memorable visit to Elgin nearly two decades earlier. On February 8, 1997, the actor and TV personality made an appearance in the town to open a new branch of Thorntons - a national chain shop selling chocolates and toffee.

At the time, McFadden was widely recognised for his role as Gary McDonald in the soap opera Take the High Road. His visit drew a large crowd of fans eager to meet him and celebrate the shop's opening.
The Thorntons shop, located at 101 High Street in Elgin, has since closed.
