Moray Moments: Sunrise on Lossie
Hazel Thompson, who took this photo, says: "A misty Lossiemouth beach at sunrise ... it makes for a lovely walk along the sands."
The town of Lossiemouth is an amalgamation of several ancient fishing villages.
Kinneddar, Stotfield, Seatown and Branderburgh all once sat on a long, thin strip of land which stood between the Moray Firth and Loch Spynie.
The loch used to be many, many times larger than it is today, meaning that all the farmland that nowadays surrounds Lossie was once underwater.
Filled with seawater, Spynie Loch stretched a full eight miles west towards Burghead.
However, in 1600, a huge sandstorm cut it off the sea.
Then, in the mid-1800s, the famous engineer Thomas Telford – the man who built the iconic bridge at Craigellachie – drained Loch Spynie to its current size.
