MORNA Young has been nominated for Scots Writer of the Year as part of the Scots Language Awards.

The Burghead-born writer has based many of her plays in and around the local area.

These include Lost at Sea, which was staged earlier this year.

The play tells the stories of the many Scottish fishermen who have perished in the Moray Firth, including her own father, Donnie, who fell overboard when Morna was aged just five.

The playwright, who is now aged 35, said: "I'm really chuffed and surprised that I've been nominated

"It's a public vote so, if you have a wee minute, please consider voting – you don’t have to vote in every category.

"I'd really appreciate the support."

The awards will be announced on September 27."
