MORAY Council is suspending the collection of recycling bins until further notice.

The council says normal collections will resume as soon as circumstances allow.

From Monday, March 30, only green and brown bins will be collected. Collection dates for these bins will stay the same.

The measure also applies to trade waste customers.

The council made the decision after a reduction in workforce as its people follow government guidance to self-isolate, and to reduce the number of crew members in each vehicle to comply with social distancing instructions.

A spokesman said: "Suspending recycling collections will have the least impact on householders and council waste operations, and allow Moray Council to focus on delivering critical public services during the emergency COVID-19 response."

Moray Council’s waste manager, Mike Neary, is urging residents to be mindful of the amount of waste being produced by their households.

He said: "We know that reducing recycling collections will be disruptive to households and we apologise for this. We have a duty of care, to colleagues and residents, to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and we must make sure we can continue to provide services in the safest way possible.

"Please do not place recyclables into your green bin as these will end up in landfill.

"If you can, bag or box any extra recycling materials you have and store these until recycling collections resume.

"We’ll restore a full service as soon as we can, and will collect excess."

The council says it has suspended the service in line with other Scottish councils.

Meanwhile, the council apologised today for not being able to complete recycling collections in some parts of Elgin, Keith and Buckie. These will be collected tomorrow and households affected are asked to have bins out by 7.30am.
