Using various measures to barricade all three of gates the activists prevented vehicles from going in and out of the Altens base between 6.30am until 7.30pm.

Some of the activists – dressed as the Red Rebel Brigade – also brought their protest to Aberdeen city centre yesterday afternoon

A statement from Extinction Rebellion Scotland said: "Activists spent 13 hours blockading the entrances to Shell HQ all day, sending a message that we won't take their wilful avoidance in the face of the climate emergency any more.

The group promised further action until governments and industry responded "sensibly and appropriately" to warnings from scientists and prominent figures like Sir David Attenborough.

Their statement added: "Anything other than a rapid winding down of the fossil fuel industry is irresponsible and reckless."
