A Moray teenager who advertised drugs for sale on social media has been ordered to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work as an alternative to prison.

Andrew Carr was also placed on 18 months of supervision by social workers and warned he faces jail if he doesn't comply.

Defence solicitor Ben Thom told Inverness Sheriff Court that his client had been self-medicating with cannabis for a mental health issue.

He added that Carr's habit had developed into an addiction.

To fund it he ran an online enterprise during January and February this year, selling to friends.

Mr Thom said: "He has overcome his addiction, removed himself from negative influences and intends to engage with college." .

Sheriff Gary Aitken told Carr: "Whatever state you get yourself into, it doesn't help to dig yourself out of it by selling cannabis to others."

Sentence had previously been deferred on the 18-year-old for a background report.

During that appearance the court was told that, having obtained a search warrant, officers raided Carr's house in Queen's Lane, Lossiemouth on February 21.

About a third of an ounce of cannabis was found within various small quantity bags in his bedroom.

Also recovered was 0.82 grams of cocaine which the police deemed as for personal use.

His iPhone was also seized.

On it were found messages and adverts offering cannabis for sale.

Carr admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis and possession of cocaine.
