A Moray MP is among those pushing for the UK to officially recognise the State of Palestine amidst growing international pressure to end the war.

Graham Leadbitter, will join with SNP colleagues in Westminster to push for recognition of the State of Palestine.

It comes as the Prime Minister announced earlier this week that the UK will recognise Palestine in September — however, only if Israel continues the war on Gaza.

Last week, the SNP Westminster group confirmed that it will table a Palestine Recognition Bill when the House of Commons returns in September – if the Labour Government continued in its failure to recognise Palestine and imposed further delays and further preconditions.

Commenting, Moray West, Nairn and Strathspey MP, Graham Leadbitter said: “By far, most emails I receive from constituents are about Gaza and the suffering that is being levelled, by Israel, against its people.

“And it’s no wonder why. Everyday our screens are filled with new images of horror of civilians killed by gunfire or bombs, and of children starving to death.

“Recognition of the State of Palestine would place enormous pressure on Israel to end their relentless assault on Gaza which has killed tens of thousands of innocent people.”

He added that now, the Prime Minister’s plan is “intent on rewarding Israel”, when they should, instead, be sanctioned.

“Recognition of Palestine should be in the hands of the elected representatives and government of this country - not in Benjamin Netanyahu’s,” he added.

“If Keir Starmer won’t do the right thing by recognising Palestine, without the conditions he's put down, then the SNP will force a vote on the issue in Parliament.”
