Buckie mum’s fundraising efforts recognised with Moray and Banffshire Heroes Award win

A mum of two from Buckie has been recognised for raising over £40,000 for local cancer support groups over the past 18 months.

Emma Byrne (42) was named Fundraiser of the Year at the Moray and Banffshire Heroes Awards at a ceremony at the Banff Springs Hotel on Friday night.

Diagnosed with breast cancer at 32, Emma underwent chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy, and was given the all-clear.

However, just before turning 40, she received the difficult news that the cancer had spread to both breasts, her spine and pelvis.

Though she is “deeply saddened” by her diagnosis, the St Peter’s Nursery assistant is determined to make the most of every moment and was delighted to accept the award.

Emma said: “I was so speechless to be nominated for a start because doing this is really just to help others because a lot of people don’t have the same support network as I do.

“To be recognised for it, is something special though and it’s a great achievement because there are so many amazing people in there tonight so to be able to share the stage with them is absolutely phenomenal.”
