Musician Andy McCormack receives Royal award

A DUFFTOWN musician was officially handed his British Empire Medal in a ceremony yesterday.

Andy McCormack, who was included in the New Year's Honours list, received the award from Clare Russell, the Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire.

Andy first picked up the fiddle at the age of six and has been playing ever since.

Over the years he has performed at the Royal Albert Hall and hundreds, if not thousands, of dances across the North East.

With the Celtic Fiddle Orchestra he toured New Zealand and has played at St Andrew’s Night celebrations in Bangladesh and India for the British High Commission. He has even played at a wedding in Finland.

Monday nights find him surrounded by fellow musicians at the weekly Stramash at Dufftown’s Royal British Legion.

On Tuesdays he joins up with the Elgin Strathspey and Reel Society.

He's also well known locally as a member of the popular Sair Heidies,
