THE Nappy Army will be cheering on competitors in the Bell’s Rotary Marafun.

Over 600 runners will take part in the Elgin street relay marathon on Sunday, which is set to raise in excess of £40,000 for local charities.

One of the teams will be from VIP Childcare at Elgin Community Centre and youngsters from the centre will be out with their pom-poms and banners to encourage them along the way.

VIP Childcare is one of the 100 local charities that will benefit from the funds raised by the Marafun, which is a huge added incentive for the team.

Therese Shorthouse, centre manager, said: "The children are really excited about the event, the staff and parents have all rallied round and now that the day is almost here this is giving great encouragement to the team."

Since the first Marafun in 1991, the event has raised over £550,000 for local causes.

And with a maximum field of 125 teams on Sunday, it is set to be another success.

Ian Davidson, president of Elgin Rotary Club who will be running, said: "We are delighted to get 125 teams and to get that kind of response is tremendous."

Each runner in the teams completes 5.2 miles, which is eight laps of the town centre circuit.

A primary school parade lap gets underway at 12.20pm followed by the main event at 12.45pm.
