A MORAY mechanic has been named as one of the 10 best in the UK after a national competition.

Murdo Macleod, of Ace Tuning in Lossiemouth's Shore Street, was a semi-finalist in the Top Technician of 2019 search, run by automotive publication Aftermarket.

To get to that stage, he had to correctly answer numerous online questions covering every aspect of vehicle repair.

Then, he travelled to Northampton to complete a series of tough tests on actual vehicles.

Aftermarket editor Alex Wells, said: "Top Technician has been testing the skills of the UK’s mechanics since 2002.

"Now in its 17th year, over 1000 of the best and brightest technicians enter every year.

"They compete in three online rounds that test their knowledge, before the 10 best are invited to a live semi-final round where they must diagnose faults on specially set-up cars.

"To reach this point in Top Technician marks out Murdo as one of the very best techs in the UK.

"It is a major achievement to be in the top ten of the competition and in the semi final.

"Well done to Murdo and we look forward to seeing him back in the competition next year."

Mr Macleod, who started life as a motor mechanic in 1978, said he was thrilled to have made it so far in the national event.

The Top 10 finish beats his previous personal best, coming in the top 24 in 2009 and 2010.
