The new name of the strath's £20m community hospital nearing completion in Aviemore has been officially confirmed.

NHS Highland’s Health Board members agreed with the recommendation of Badenoch and Strathspey Community Hospital at their latest meeting

yesterday.

The move will come as no surprise to local residents as the name has been used unofficially by NHS Highland for the best part of year.

Deborah Jones, the organisation’s director of planning, performance and strategic commissioning, told board members that the design and building of the new hospital at Dalfaber had involved extensive engagement with the local community.

She said: “Within Badenoch and Strathspey we have had very good engagement with the public and the community at large and as a consequence discussions have been ongoing right from almost the get go about what the new hospital will be and how it will impact on the public.

“So, in a sense, we have right from a very early stage seen an identity emerging which has been embraced by the public and the community at large in so far as the name.”

She told members of the recommended name which had been well received by local residents and committee chairman Boyd Robertson said there was a “clear recommendation” for it.

Boyd Peters, from NHS Highland who had played a prominent part in the project, told them the project had been under way for quite a few years and there had been a “robust engagement process” throughout.

He said it had a central location within the village and added: “It was a very good piece of work with a great deal of engagement with the local society.

"I am very pleased that we have reached this official stage and the next date hopefully will be the opening ceremony later this year. So I am very pleased to endorse the name that is in the paper and go through the process described.”

Board member Margaret Moss said the solution was already there and added: “By using a name that is essentially already being used and it seems like a really sensible name.”
