Elgin cemetery construction progress sees initial work carried out
Construction is well under way on work to build a new cemetery in Elgin.
It will be located off the town’s Linkwood Road and Hallowood Road.
The site was identified through the Local Development Plan as suitable for the replacement of the existing cemetery on Linkwood Road, near Reiket Lane, which is nearly full.
A Moray Council spokesperson said: “Work has been carried out on the access routes and tree removal, which is necessary for visibility and road safety.
“We're committed to enhancing biodiversity and protecting local wildlife though - felled and fallen trees and branches will be retained on site to support natural habitats.
“Over 1000 new trees, along with areas of shrubs and wildflowers, will be planted to enrich the landscape.”
The 5.6 hectare site is roughly the size of eight football pitches. It will act as a replacement for the town’s existing cemetery which is nearly full.
The development will include parking, a pedestrian path and extensive landscaping to create a respectful environment.
Around 35 trees will be removed to allow for visibility and access routes, while more than 1000 new trees, areas of shrubs and wildflowers will also be planted to improve biodiversity.
The project, with construction by Pat Munro Ltd, is being delivered in phases with the first burial area due to be completed by December 2026. The full cemetery is expected to be operational by spring 2027.
