New life for derelict Elgin nightclub
New life will be breathed into a derelict Elgin town centre nightclub and bar if a planning application is approved.
The development, which includes flats, shops and a business hub, is part of the £100 million Moray Growth Deal.
It will be built over the former Jailhouse nightclub and Newmarket bar as well as three other properties on South Street.
Meanwhile an old close will be opened up to create a walkway between South Street and High Street.
The proposals put forward by Robertson Property Limited also include 38 one and two bedroom affordable flats.
With the exception of 53-55 South Street, which is occupied by a furniture shop, the other buildings involved have been empty for some time.
The Jailhouse has been closed since being badly damaged by a fire in the late 1990s.
All the buildings will be demolished to make way for the development, with the exception of a C-listed archway at the entrance to the former Junners toy shop.
This will form the entrance to the new development.
The proposals, which are recommended for approval, will go before Moray Council’s planning committee on Tuesday, May 28.
Senior planning officer Andrew Miller said: “This proposal represents a significant investment for a wholesale redevelopment of part of Elgin town centre that has lain vacant for some years.
“And to some degree the fire-damaged section has been a blight on its immediate surrounds.”
