A POP-UP shop on Elgin High Street is aiming to offer shoppers all of the area's best hand-crafted goods under one roof.

The temporary shop, set up by local company El:gin, has also filled a vacant premises on the high street – where DJ Kids used to be located, across from the Northern Fish Restaurant.

At present, Engraved With Love, Franya's Sweet Creations and Emma's Fancy Wee Piece, among others, have items available for purchase in store.

El:gin distiller Kelly Jack explained the idea behind opening the pop-up shop, which will remain at 218 High Street until Christmas.

"We are trying to encourage folk to shop local," she said.

"Lots of people are not aware of the fantastic, locally-made products there are on offer. You can shop online but it’s not the same as coming in and looking at the products.

"We thought this would be a way of supporting ourselves, other businesses and bringing more choice and something a bit different to the high street.

"The people we contacted were keen to get involved so it has all gone well so far."

Kelly added that the cancellation of El:gin's many planned events due to coronavirus was also a big factor in the opening of the shop.

"With covid, things have changed and events have been cancelled," she said.

"A lot of people would have attended summer events, like Spirit of Speyside, but with none happening we were thinking about how else could we could come together and put things out there.

"We thought why not bring this to the high street and take in other local crafters to let people see what is available locally.

"It’s great that it’s all under one roof and it’s a chance to talk to our customers – something we have missed this year with all the big events cancelled.

She added: "We have our entire range of gin available, including our Christmas gin-gle gin which is made from a family recipe dating back over 100 years.

"We have a range of hampers and we can make them with the customers choice of products to make it more personal."

The shop is open from Wednesday to Saturday from 10.30am until 4.30pm.

There is hope that it will open up on a Thursday night and Sunday afternoon in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
