A TAKEAWAY with a focus on local and healthy produce is set to open up in Elgin this week.

Hungry Haggis, located at 69 High Street beside Farmfoods, will open for business at 4.30pm on Friday.

A breakfast bar is set to be in operation at weekends from 10am until 2pm, with the more traditional takeaway operating from 4.30pm until 11pm, and until 1am at the weekend.

Everything from paninis to pizza to fish and chips is available, all freshly-made.

Owner Ryan Deacon, who is moving home to Elgin from Inverkeithing to open the business with his family, said: "All of our meals are freshly-made with local butchers meat and organic veg.

"We source our vegetables from Speyside Fruit and Veg and most of our meat is from the butcher on Batchen Street – but we want to support more than one local butcher.

"The food is a cut above most takeaways. We want to provide something different and want to make sure that everyone can see we are not like normal takeaways. It's kind of like a butcher's takeaway."

Mr Deacon has said he is "more confident than worried" about opening the takeaway during the coronavirus pandemic.

He added: "I have been biting my fingers a wee bit but we are offering something different.

"One of the complaints I hear about Elgin is that there is nowhere decent to eat. People don't mind paying if they are getting decent stuff.

"The worry is people not having the money at the moment, but our takeaway is at least four or five pounds cheaper on every meal so I'm more confident than worried."

Mr Deacon said there is a possibility of opening a sit-in restaurant next door to the takeaway, but he isn't thinking about that at the moment.

There are several promotions on for the takeaway's opening weekend, including children eating for free from Friday through to Sunday.
