Hythehill Primary School Nursery in Lossiemouth gets glowing report from Care Inspectorate
A primary school nursery has earned glowing praise from the Care Inspectorate for providing a warm, supportive, and engaging learning environment where children thrive.
In their latest inspection report, published following an unannounced visit to Hythehill Primary School Nursery in Lossiemouth on 16 April 2025, inspectors highlighted the nursery’s caring approach, strong relationships with families, and the wide range of play-based learning on offer.
Staff are described as kind, caring, and attentive, helping children feel safe, valued, and confident.
They noted that staff knew each child well and responded to their individual needs with care and understanding.
Personal plans were regularly reviewed with families, and staff worked closely with other professionals to make sure children received the right support at the right time.
Mealtimes were calm and social, with children encouraged to be independent by pouring drinks, choosing their own cutlery, and serving themselves.
Some children also enjoyed snacks outdoors, giving staff the chance to build positive relationships and support learning through conversation.
The play environments, both indoors and outdoors, were full of interesting and engaging activities. Resources were carefully set up to spark curiosity and child-led learning.
Children were deeply involved in imaginative play, while staff supported early language, literacy, and numeracy through fun, hands-on experiences.
Leadership at the nursery was also seen as a key strength. Families were invited to share feedback, leading to improvements like new drop-off routines that improved daily communication.
Staff felt supported and valued and were actively involved in helping to improve the nursery.
Three of the four key areas assessed during the inspection were rated as ‘very good’, including the care given to children, the nursery environment, and how well the nursery is managed.
The fourth area, staff deployment, was rated as ‘good’. Inspectors suggested a small improvement around staff breaks, which the nursery had already been addressing by bringing in additional support.
Hythehill Primary Nursery’s Manager, Michelle Johnson, commented: “I’m incredibly proud of our whole team and the positive feedback we’ve received.
“Our staff’s passion and commitment to the children and their families shine through every day, and it’s lovely to see that recognised.”
Moray Council’s Early Years Continuous Improvement Officer, Catherine Mackenzie, said: “I’m really pleased to see such positive feedback for the Hythehill team.
“The staff work so hard to give children the best possible start, and their caring, thoughtful approach is making a real difference.”
Moray Council’s Chief Education Officer, Vivienne Cross, added: “This is a fantastic report and a credit to the caring, dedicated team at Hythehill Nursery.
“It’s clear that children are benefiting from high-quality care, fun and engaging learning experiences, and strong support from staff. My thanks and congratulations go to the manager and her whole team for their excellent work."
